Culture as Competitive Advantage™

I was watching one of the Saturday morning pregame shows, College GameDay, this past weekend when the subject turned to culture. This caught my attention! They were previewing a game that involved Michigan State, where one of their pundits, Nick Saban, broke out as a college coach.  Nick went on to win six national titles at Alabama and one at LSU.


They were discussing the winning culture that Nick cultivated with his teams, which initially emerged at Michigan State.  Kirk Herbstreit, the host of the show, asked Nick about the origins of his approach to team culture.  Nick told him he had a bit of an epiphany regarding Transformational Leadership early on with Michigan State.  He realized if he focused on making everyone around him better, both coaches and players, the outcome of the games tended to take care of themselves.  He cultivated a winning culture by getting his coaches and players to focus on the productivity drivers for winning football…the results followed.


I discovered this myself, some twenty five years ago, while working at STERIS Corporation.  We were highly acquisitive and lightly integrative at that time, if you know what I mean…everything felt like a heavy lift.  One of the most important things I could do with my day was to run interference for my managers.  I was the filter between senior leadership and day-to-day, customer facing management.  And it worked!  Our team was free to execute on our strategy without distractions.  Not only did our business unit flourish, but my team went on to have wonderful careers employing a philosophy we truly co-created.  What we did together was transformational.
